The Triad Lady Cardinals travelled to Indian Lake for a non-conference game against the 9-3 Lady Lakers on Monday night, and using a great team effort pulled off a 52-51 upset in overtime.
“We were already down 3 players with injuries, and today one of our starters was out with the flu, leaving us only 7 dressed,” said Lady Card coach Jeff Merklin. “And of those 7, 2 are foreign exchange students who have never played basketball before this season. So to go up to Indian Lake and get a win shows what a really good group of girls we have this year.”
Cati LeVan led Triad with 27 points along with 5 assists, with senior post Makenzie Cauley dropping 14 in support. Bailey Perry had 5 points, including a big basket late in regulation to get the game to overtime, and also led the Cardinals with 5 rebounds. “One of the exchange students, Nina Hesterman, had a huge basket to give us a 3 point lead late in OT,” noted Merklin. “We also got much needed quality minutes from freshman Haidyn Sarrazine and our other exchange student, Anna DeLaunay.” Frani LeVan played her usual solid game running the Cardinal point, notching 4 points, 3 assists, and 3 rebounds.
With the win, Triad jumps to 5-6 on the season. The Lady Cards will host Graham Wednesday night in another non-conference tilt.
