Cards over Gophers

Basketball coaches often preach defense and good free throw shooting as the keys to victory.  The Triad Lady Cardinals used that old formula in rallying from a 31-23 halftime deficit to an exciting 60-54 win over the Ridgemont Lady Gophers Tuesday night in Mt. Victory.

"This was our 3rd game in 4 nights, and we were still playing without senior Tori Thomas, and I just wasn't sure we had enough gas in the tank," said Lady Cardinal coach Jeff Merklin.  "But, my gosh, these girls reached down deep and in the last 12 minutes of the game played as well a defense as any team I've ever coached, and in the 4th quarter we were 12-13 from the line, and 14-17 for the game.   Fantastic team effort tonight."

While Emma Vanninem's 18 points led Triad, freshman Cati LeVan continued to show she's fully ready for high school varsity basketball, scoring 11 of Triad's 23 points in the 4th quarter and playing an excellent floor game.  Her twin sister Frani got her offense going as well, as she and point guard Alea Ferguson had 10 each.

"And, as we know, the numbers don't tell everything," said Merklin.  "Kristin Bailey is our best defensive player, and tonight we put her on Jennifer Jordan, one of the top players in the area, and Kristin held her to 5 points.  Kris also nailed 2 key free throws with 27 seconds left to help seal the win for Triad.

The win lifted Triad's record to 3-1.   The Lady Cards get back to Ohio Heritage Conference play, where they're 1-0, on Thursday night with a home game against West Jefferson.
