Cards crush the Knights!
The Triad Lady Cardinal basketball team put together one of their best efforts of the season Thursday night, and posted a 60-49 victory over the visiting Greenon Lady Knights in an Ohio Heritage Conference matchup.
"We were coming off a disappointing loss to Graham on Monday," said Cardinal coach Jeff Merklin, "and our focus was on trying to put together 24-25 minutes of good basketball, since we've been a little inconsistent this 2nd half of the season. It also helped to get our senior point guard Alea Ferguson back in the lineup, as she couldn't play Monday due to an injury. She's very, very important to this basketball team."
The statistics showed just how important Ferguson's role was in the victory. Ferguson was 5-10 from the field, including 2 trifectas, 4-4 at the line for 16 points, and she also dished out 7 assists. "Alea was magnificent tonight," said Merklin, "but it was a total team effort." Emma Vanninen scored 16, Tori Thomas added 11 (with 3 treys), Audrey Lightle had 10 rebounds to go with 8 points, Cati LeVan hit 3 treys for 9 points, and Makenzie Cauley had 3 blocked shots. Merklin also credited assistant Erica Trainer with an excellent defensive game plan. "Erica did a really super job on scouting and setting up our defensive strategy, as she always does."
"Greenon is an excellent, well coached basketball team. This was really a good win for our girls," said Merklin.
With the win, Triad goes to 11-10 on the season, 8-7 in the Ohio Heritage Conference. The Lady Cards finish the regular season Saturday afternoon at home against Northeastern on Senior Day.
