Cards over Jets
Alea Ferguson scorched the nets for 22 points, and added 8 rebounds, 6 steals and 6 assists to lead the visiting Triad Lady Cardinals to a 73-65 Ohio Heritage Conference win over the Northeastern Jets on Thursday night.
"Alea had one of the best floor games I've seen as a coach," said Lady Card coach Jeff Merklin. "Her energy level is astounding, being able to do what she can with the ball while always going full tilt on defense."
But it was truly a team effort which allowed Triad to snap a 3 game losing streak. "My assistant, Erica Trainer, noticed in film that Northeastern was not the best passing team we'd seen, so we elected to play tight defense on the 2 players who could handle the ball. Erica's strategy worked as we had 22 steals tonight. And Audrey Lightle had her best game in 2 years, scoring 16 points, nearly all tough points coming in the paint, and she also had 6 rebounds. Our other post, Makenzie Cauley, played a very good game with 11 rebounds and 7 points. The 2 games those girls put up in the post was vital, because we were missing Emma Vanninen tonight, and Emma's been our leading scorer and rebounder this year."
Also cited by Merklin for winning efforts were Kristin Bailey, who played her usual good defense and had a pair of timely 3s and Cati LeVan, who hit 2 trifectas in the 4th quarter, blunting a Northeastern run. "But, really, it was truly a team effort," said Merklin. "We had 8 people score, we had the 22 steals, and 20 assists. All of the girls played well."
The Lady Cards advance to 5-4 on the season, 3-3 in the Ohio Heritage Conference. The Lady Cards are now off for the holiday, returning to play with a Saturday afternoon 1:00 non-league tilt at Tipp City Bethel on Saturday, December 30.
