The Triad Lady Cardinals traveled to Milford Center for their initial Ohio Heritage Conference game against the Fairbanks Lady Panthers on Saturday afternoon, and after a slow start, pulled away for a 58-41 victory.

Triad was led by Finnish exchange student Emma Vanninem, who scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.  "Emma really got us started today, especially in the 2nd quarter when we had been struggling offensively," said Card coach Jeff Merklin.  "The thing that's so nice about her game is she is a classic European post who can score not only from in the paint but also can step outside and hit the 3.  That's important to us because it opens up some more seams for our guards.  And with her versatility, it enables us to play other girls in their more natural positions."

Vanninem wasn't the only Card on fire, though.  Senior point guard Alea Ferguson scored 15 big points, all in the last 3 quarters, and played stellar defense.   Freshman Cati LeVan chipped in with 10 points, and both Audrey Lightle and Makenzie Cauley helped in the post, notching 7 rebounds each.  "I"m really pleased with our offenisve rebounding," Merklin said.  "We had 20 offensive rebounds today and that was a difference maker."

The Cards, now 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the OHC, are home to DeGraff Riverside Monday night in a non-league tilt.
